Put a Brighter Smile in Your Life

Who May Benefit from Teeth Whitening
Almost anyone. There are some cases where treatment may not be effective. Whitening will not change the color of fillings or crowns. However, if your teeth have yellowed with age or are stained from tobacco, tea, coffee, and food, whitening will brighten your smile. Teeth with antibiotic (tetracycline) stains and discoloration caused by injury may take longer to whiten or require treatment with other methods such as bonding, veneers, or crowns.

How Is Whitening Done?
We offer tow methods of whitening; In-office Whitening System call "Zoom" or take-home whitening system.
(A cleaning is recommended prior to either method of whitening.)

Zoom:
Zoom is a whitening process that lightens discoloration of enamel and dentin. The Zoom light-activated whitening gel's active ingredient is Hydrogen Peroxide. As the Hydrogen Peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, whitening colored substances while the structure of the tooth is unchanged.

The Zoom Whitening procedure is simple and painless. It begins with preparation to isolate the lips and gums. Whitening gel is applied to the teeth and then activated with a specially designated light. A five minute fluoride treatment completes the procedure. The complete procedure takes just over a hour. Sensitivity during the treatment may occur with some patients but will dissipate. The Zoom procedure includes a take-home touch-up kit and trays that can be used whenever discoloration is noticed. Most often a touch-up once a year will maintain a whiter smile that will last for years.

Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening under the supervision of a dentist is safe. As with any tooth whitening product, Zoom is not recommended for children under 13. It is also not recommended for pregnant or lactating women.

Take-Home Method
The Take-home whitening gel's active ingrediant is carbamide peroxide. As the carbamide peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, and whitens the colored substances. The structure of the tooth is not changed; only the tooth color is lighter.

During your diagnostic visit, impressions of your teeth are taken. This allows your dentist to make a custom fit tray to hold the whitening gel. At your second visit, you will be fitted with your whitening trays and provided with a take-home whitening kit. You will be given instructions on how to administer the gel and how often to wear you trays. Results may be seen after the first application. Maximum results generally take 10 to 14 applications. Sensitivity may occur during treatment with some patients but should dissipate within 1 to 3 days. Some patients may need to "touch-up" for 1 to 2 days once or twice a year.

Helpful Tips
For best results, follow these tips:

  • Brush and floss your teeth before putting in the bleaching trays.
  • Follow your dentist's directions exactly, and use only the materials your dentist gives you.
  • Spit out any excess saliva.  The bleach won't harm you if swallowed, but it can irritate your throat.
  • Don't eat or drink while you have the trays in your mouth.
  • Rinse your mouth out well after bleaching.
  • Avoid citrus fruits and other acidic foods. They can make your teeth more sensitive.
  • Call your dentist if your throat, teeth, or gums feel irritated.

Keeping Your Teeth White

Don't smoke. Smoking stains the outer layers of your teeth, causing them to turn brown.

Avoid food and liquids that stain. Red wine, tea, coffee, and some foods, such as berries, can leave stains on your teeth.

Brush and floss your teeth at least once a day to remove plaque.  Plaque truns to tartar (calculus), which can discolor your teeth.

See your dentist for regular checkups and cleaning.  Removing plaque and tartar helps keep your teeth white and free of decay.
